Background: To find out the memopause-related knowledge, attitude and behaviour of 40 years and older women in Dogubeyazęt county of Agrę province.
Materials and method: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study; a survey was conducted 40 years and older women in Dogubeyazętcounty of Agrę province between October and December 2007, and 1068 women were included in the study.
Results: The participated in the research was 50.9% of these women were illiterate, and 96.6% were house wives. While 59.6% of the women, who participated in the research, had never smoked, 13.7% smoked every day. Approximately 59.6% of the women indicated that they had heard of the term menopause beforehand. Some 98.4% of the women, who were familiar with the term menopause, defined it as “cessation of menstruation”. The most common complaints they were familiar with in relation to menopause were nervousness, distress (38.2%) and depression (13.8%). The most common source of information was health professionals with a ratio of 54.6%. While 68.2% of the women answered the question “Can menopause be treated?” as “yes” and 25.8% as “no” indicated. The rate of women, who thought that a menopausal woman had less sexual intercourse, was 22.9%, while 32% of the women stated that there would be no change in the sex life of menopausal women.
Conclusions: It was observed that their knowledge about menopause was inadequate. In the light of this information, it was concluded that health professionals should provide women with more consultancy service about menopause.
