Although hand washing with soap is probably one of the most cost-effective methods of preventing morbidity and mortality in developing countries, it is still practiced by only a tiny minority of people. Whilst hygiene education has not made many inroads into this problem, modern methods of hygiene promotion, which take lessons from commercial marketing practice, are more promising. We present a toolkit that offers skills, tools, motivation and inspiration for health workers and school teachers who, despite often working in difficult conditions, are keen to make their hygiene promotion activities more effective.
