Psychometric properties of the menopause-specific quality of life questionnaire in a Turkish population

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Menopause-specific Quality of Life Questionnaire-Intervention (MENQOL) in a Turkish population.

Methods: In 2008, The English language version of the MENQOL was translated into Turkish language and 152 women who attended to a hospital clinic completed a questionnaire include the Turkish MENQOL-intervention and the Turkish version of World Health Organization-Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF-TR). Internal consistency, construct validity, and convergent validity analysis were performed.

Results: All of the women, 25.3% were illiterate and 93.3% were married. Nearly ¾ of the women were housewife and 42.7% had low income. Mean age and standard deviation (SD) was 49.3± 4.4, mean marital age and SD 18.9± 2.0. Total pregnancy number of the women was 5.2 ± 2.

With regard to reliability analysis, Chronbach alpha value for all the items was 0.87. Overall mean score and standard deviation of the MENQOL = 126.5 ± 30.5.  In the split-half method, Chronbach alpha were 0.75 for part 1, and 0.80 for part two. Correlation between two parts was 0.71. In the item statistics, Chronbach alpha varied between 0.85 and 0.87 if one item deleted.  Item 31 had zero variance.  Correlations among the subgroups of MENQOL were significant except the correlation between physical and psychosocial (P<0.01).  Total score of the MENQOL was significantly and negatively correlated with the WHOQOL-BREF-TR (P<0.01). In terms of construct validity, 9 factors were extracted and cumulative factor loading of these components was 79.1%.

Conclusion: The results of this study have supported that the translated version of MENQOL-intervention had reliable and valid psychometric properties, and that it can be used to evaluate the quality of life in Turkish women in menopausal period.
