How does medical education effect the nutrition knowledge and behaviour of students as future counsellor and rol-model for population?
Medical students are the leader group of all university students about knowing and behaving adequate and balanced diet. The aim of this study is to evaluate impact of medical education on the level of nutrition knowledge and behaviour. This was designed as a cross sectional study. In order to compare the knowledge and behaviour of 1st-year and 5th-year students, data was collected from 264 students (86.4%, n=313) with a questionnaire under observation and  height and weight of students were measured. Three different scale were used to measure `general knowledge about nutrition;GKAN`, `medical knowledge about nutrition;MKAN` and ` behaviour of adequate and balanced diet;BABD`.
Fifty-five percent of the students were in the 1st-year and 44.7% were 5th graders. The mean age of 1st-year and 5th-year students were 19.7±1.4 and 23.9±0.8, where fifty-six percent of them were male. The mean BMI of all students were 22.5±3.3 kg/m².
The scores of the students were around medium level, where the GNAN-scores are 68%,  MKAN-scores, 31% and BABD-scores, 55%. Total GKAN-scores and total MKAN-scores of 5th-year students are significantly higher than 1st-year students. Unfortunatelly there is no significant difference between BABD-scores of 1st-year and 5th-year students.
Although total GKAN-scores and MKAN- scores of females were found significantly higher from males, there was no significant difference between BABD-scores of males and females.
The light of this study findings’ mentioned that medical education was effective on learning  nutrition knowledge but not behaviour. It is suggested that the skills methodology on nutrition shuold be improved in Medical Schools for students as future counsellor and rol-model for population.
