Aims and background. Many published studies about alcohol consumption prevalence among university students show abuse and dysfunction in some cases. The aim of this study is to describe student alcohol consumption at the University of Santiago del Estero (Argentina).
Methods. Data was collected by a self-administrated questionnaire held among a population sample of 408 students, both male and female, aged between 17 and    48 years.
Results. Lifetime prevalence of alcohol consumption is 83%. Higher prevalence and frequency  of consumption is observed among men. Mean daily alcohol consumption is 21.10 grams, the average consumption in the weekends being as high as 38.91 grams per day. Risk levels of alcohol consumption are more prevalent among men (26.7%) than among women (17.1%). Beer and wine are the most  consumed drinks.

Conclusions. Our results encourage campaigning against alcohol consumption during a student’s entire academic formation.
