PERIOD OF DEPLOYMENT: November 2006 - May 2008
TARGET: Students of a secondary school of the first and second grade, from 12 to 18 years for a total of 107 classes and about 2150 students
THEMES:
The sustainability of school buildings
Analysis of CO2 emissions of school and personal
Waste management
ACTIONS: a part of the project turned the collection and analysis of needs and energy consumption of personal and school-related emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, the development and implementation of concrete energy savings, research - proposal for alternative energy sources to meet the need of users, the realization of experiments and practical tests to better analyze and understand the possible uses of alternative sources of energy.
RESULTS:
- a reduction in energy consumption by 10% to 40% with an estimated reduction of CO2 emissions of about 600 kg; - an increase in the collection, has increased from 20% to 60%, reducing half the proportion of waste from undifferentiated confer landfill, with a consequent savings of energy and raw materials.
By reducing the consumption of raw materials and energy, were lowered emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, with a consequent benefit of human health: lower emission of PM10 and mitigation of the greenhouse effect.
The project had the principal purpose of promoting the principles of sustainability and help to rationalize and reduce personal consumption as requested by the european strategic planning.
Starting the observation of their living environment in terms of consumption and needs, it was given the opportunity to design develop and transformer actions (proposals aimed at saving energy, changing own behavior).
The project was an opportunity to create alliances with various players in the territory to follow up the promotion of responsible behavior proposed by the students.
Learning Objectives: 1. To promote processes of participation of children in decisions that affect their living environment, starting to deal the theme of sustainable development, aimed to analyze the needs and the environmental status of the school, until you get when you start a process towards the sustainability of space and its 'residents' 2. To involve schools and institutions of the Valdarno Inferiore and Circondario Empolese - Val d'Elsa when virtuous behavior aimed at reducing its emissions of CO2; 3. To contribute to the development of a sensitivity not ephemeral against the environmental issue; 4. To recognize the interdependence of physical phenomena, natural and cultural; 5. To promote responsable behavior aimed at reducing waste and rationalization of consumption; 6. To create a path, starting from school, information to local communities and promote relations with the institutional processes aimed at improving environmental performance on individual behavior and the sustainability of physical structures (school buildings, homes, etc.…); 7. To reduce its energy consumption with a consequent reduction of CO2 emissions; 8. To drive up the separate collection of waste and waste recycling with a consequent saving of energy and a reduction of CO2 emissions; 9. To achieve a greater sharing of problems and a deepening of systemic dimension of the relationship human beings-nature.
