Importance of Midwifery Training to Strengthens the PHC in Pakistan,

Up to 3.6 million deaths & 8 million illnesses & disabilities from pregnancy or childbirth could be avoided and save the lives of countless newborns each year in 58 developing countries if midwifery services are improved by 2015.

Pakistan is one of among these countries who have very high maternal deaths (275/100000, which is directly related to unavailability of the skilled birth attendants (Mainly Midwives). The key issues related to shortage of midwifery services in Pakistan is we have midwifery schools but no designated post for midwifery teachers, extremely shortage of midwifery teachers,& the fresh midwifery students have been graduated with very little or no practical experience in delivering babies.

To address these issue Pakistan National Forum on Women’s Health in collaboration with GSK initiated a 6 months midwifery tutors training programme since 2009 at Koohi Goth Women’s Hospital Karachi. 30- Midwifery tutors from government & private institutes selected on merit from all provinces of Pakistan attend this full time training programme at this institute for 6 months. The programme covers two terms each lasting 14 weeks.  This covers the essentials in teaching and learning methodology, research methodology, communication, counseling and presentation skills, computer skills and English language.

The tutor training programme is an initiative that is very highly commendable and holds the potential to improve the quality of midwifery training and therefore the quality of midwifery care across the country.

Achievements:

Building of institutional capacity of public & private sector are going on, till date total 180 midwifery tutors from different provinces of Pakistan were trained to delivered quality midwifery education based on modern methods of teaching. We have an initial plan for five years and hope this will bring a sustainable change in maternal health care system in Pakistan.

Learning Objectives: This training program builds on the experiences of the tutors and integrates their rich practical knowledge into an educational framework that supports diversity and creativity in the community-learning environment. This program will strengthens the PHC system & will able to provide continuum of care across the life cycle of women for safe motherhood which will reduced MMR
