Health Equity: A Global Social Responsibility

The inequitable distribution of wealth across the globe has necessitated a great disparity in the distribution of healthcare resources across and within nations. And the unequal distribution of healthcare resources implies countries and societies lacking resources will have low health outcomes, or a majority of citizens will be unable to access healthcare services.

It is in the light of this uneven distribution of health resources across the globe that this paper sought to delineate available literature and argue that it is the inevitable social responsibility of the globe to ensure that health equity becomes the number one priority of the world. The paper will further focus on equity and how it relates and is contingent upon the health of individuals who form the bedrock of nations in particular and the globe in general.

Evidence available indicates that there are disparities in health resources distribution within and across countries. Disparity is more pronounced between developed and less developed countries, the consequence of which is low health outcomes for developing countries and higher health outcomes for developed nations.

At the end of the discourse, the paper will juxtapose equity as a value and relate it to healthcare policy and answer critical questions with regards to the world embracing health equity. The paper will also disprove the fact that equity as such health equity sought to benefit the least privileged in societies—draw resources from the rich to benefit the less privileged. Furthermore, this paper will argue that as nations especially developing nations strive within their limited resources to provide for the health needs of their citizens, it is incumbent that developed countries contribute their quota in advancing the health needs of the globe through agencies such as WHO, UNICEF and nongovernmental organizations.
