History of tobacco control in Africa and the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Article 14: Advances and challenges

Dr. Patrick Musavuli is physician who worked for the Ministry of Health and has been actively involved in campaigns to support FCTC implementation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in the AFRO region through a local NGO he was chairing. Dr. Musavuli has served in several civil society organizations in Africa such as the Africa Tobacco Control Regional Initiative (ATCRI) as consultant, African Tobacco Control Alliance (ATCA) as Board Member, and Framework Convention Alliance (FCA) as Regional Coordinator. He is collaborating with Global Bridges AFRO to recruit volunteers in francophone countries and train them. He has recently joined the Center for Tobacco Control in Africa (CTCA) as Tobacco Control Specialist. He has been AFRO delegate at various COPs and INBs, hosted an FCA sub-regional workshop, and participated in advocacy visits and other meetings in the region. In recognition for his accomplishments in the area of tobacco control in AFRO region, he has received the WHO World No Tobacco Day Awards 2010. In addition, he has considerable expertise in HIV/AIDS program. He has worked in collaboration with several organizations such as FHI, GTZ, UNDP and Ministries of health, planning, youth and family affairs in DRC on this matter.

Learning Objectives: To have the participants know the regional and global (WHO FCTC) policy initiatives for tobacco control.
