The Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA) was launched in 2006 to
respond to the global crisis in Human Resources for Health (HRH), namely the shortage of over four million health workers, mal-distribution, retention, migration and inadequate working environment. The Alliance is a partnership dedicated to identifying and facilitating solutions to the HRH crisis, especially in countries identified as having ‘critical’ shortages (mainly in Sub Saharan Africa) where efforts must be intensified for immediate action. It brings together a variety of partners and members, including national governments, civil society, finance institutions, health workers, international agencies, academic institutions and professional associations.
