THOUGHT, BEHAVIOR AND EXPERIENCE OF MEN ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN KAYMAZ DISTRICT, ESKISEHIR, TURKEY
The aim of the study was to determine the thoughts, behaviors and experiences of 18 years or older men living in Kaymaz District, Eskisehir, Turkey.
Methods:
This cross sectional study was conducted on 263 of 477 men who were living in Kaymaz district and accepted to participate to the study (participation rate=55.1%). The study was performed between 1 July and 31 August 2008. A-thirteen item-questionnaire including questions about demographic characteristics and thoughts, behaviors, and experiences of participants about domestic violence was carried out by face to face interview method.
The chi-square test was used to evaluate the data.
Results
Of the participants 50.2% perceived violence as physical violence; and 31.9% perceived domestic violence as violence towards women while just 55.5% were accepting that perceiving domestic violence only towards women is a wrong opinion.
Of the men 180 were in thought of that who behaves harshly towards someone would have been subjected to violence in their childhood, while 58.2% were explaining that the solution relies in family manners. Of the participants 57.8% were accepting domestic violence as a health problem. 51.0% of the men revealed that they did not experience violence within their family; and 54.4% of men commented that they can easily solve their problems within their family; and 40.7% stated that they try to avoid irritating expressions and actions.
The prevalence of domestic violence against men was 58.6% while the incidence was 17.5% Most frequent violence against men was physical violence (68%; n=110).
Fathers (65.8%) were the first, and mothers were the second (22.3%) who behave harshly towards sons.
It is concluded that there is a need for training of the individuals live in Kaymaz against violence.
