OUT-OF-POCKET PAYMENTS FOR HEALTH CARE IN SIVRIHISAR DISTRICT, ESKISEHIR, TURKEY
Aim:
The aim of this study was to determine the out-of-pocket payments for health care in Sivrihisar, Eskisehir
Methods:
This cross-sectional study was conducted in 399 of 466 households took place in Hizirbey, a ward of Sivrihisar District, Eskisehir between July 1- August 31 2008 (participation rate=%85.6).
Out-of-Pocket Payment for Health Care describes the annual expenditures for health care services by household members. In this study we evaluated the expenditures for hospitalization and out patient services. Expenditures for transport, food, and accommodation were not taken into account.
A-twenty two item-questionnaire concerning questions about demographic characteristics and the attendance to health units, causes of attendance and expenditures for health care was carried out to house hold leaders via face to face interview method.
Student's t test and chi-square tests were used to evaluate the data.
Results: The mean age of the household leaders was 48.34±13.55 years. Three hundred seventy two households (93.2%) were under social security umbrella. During the last six months, 65.9% (n=263) of the households had at least one health complaint, %63.4 (n=253) attended to a health unit and 24.8 %(n=99) had out-of-pocket payments for health care.
The most attendance reason was contagious diseases and the state hospital was the most frequent prefered health unit. The primary expenditures were paid for the doctor.
Most of the out-of-pocket payments were done by the persons who were not under social security umbrella and were used for private sector.
