Aim
The objective of this research is to evaluate the efficacy of premarital marriage education of the couples who apply to marry.
method
This research, within the context of the research of EgeUniversity “Public University ”, has been conducted with the collaboration of Ege University İzmir Atatürk Health of School, the Municipality of Bornova and Turkey Family Planning Foundation – İzmir Branch.
The content of the research has been formed by the couples who applied to İzmir- Bornova Municipality Çamdibi and Altındag Branches to marry between the dates of 01.11.2007–23.05.2008 and accepted to take part in this research ( n=330). The data have been gathered by trained student midwives (17 student midwives) with the technique of face to face interview. The data of the research have been gathered from a question form and an information evaluation form concerning premarital health. First the question forms have been carried out, and then the couples have been educated about premarital reproductive and mental health. After that education, information form has been carried out one more time.
The analysis of the research data has been evaluated by SPSS 16.0 pocket program.
Results
When the average score information of premarital and after marriage are compared; the average score of information after education ( =57.53±5.18) is found to be higher than the average score of information before education ( =46.39±6.22) and the distinction between the two averages has been confirmed to be statistically significant. (t=-30.225, P=0.000).
Conclusion
According to the result of the research; it has been confirmed that marital education before marriage is effective. That the studies on the premarital education are carried out by trained health personnel will help couples to have a healthy family life and prevent them from having problems related to reproductive and mental health.
