Violence is a public health issue, and one of the commonest forms of violence towards women is that inflicted by the spouse. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, nature and consequences of and contributory factors in violence towards married women in the provincial centre of Samsun, and women’s attitude towards violence.
This cross-sectional study was performed using the cluster sampling method with face to face interviews with 510 women and using a questionnaire between 24 October, 2005, and 3 March, 2006. Logistical regression analysis (the forward stepwise conditional method) was employed in determining the factors influencing intimate partner violence during marriage.
Of the women enrolled in the study, 57.1% had been exposed to emotional domestic violence, 43.3% to verbal violence, 22.5% to economic violence, 16.9% to controlling behaviour, 33.1% to physical violence, 5.5% to sexual violence and 34.3% to physical or sexual violence during the course of marriage. According to the logistic regression model, the woman’s illiteracy or her only being able to read and write, families deciding on the marriage, marriage following elopement, the woman working in places with no social guarantees, the woman’s smoking, the man having alcohol problems, the man and woman witnessing physical violence between their parents during childhood and the man inflicting emotional violence were determined as risk factors for physical or sexual domestic violence during marriage.
Domestic violence towards women appears to be a widespread problem in the study group. The most effective method of combating this problem is female education. We can only prevent women working in places with no social guarantees, forced marriages or women putting up with violence by educating girls and women.
