This presentation will provide an overview of the political, demographic, socioeconomic and health status of Maori children and their families - the indigenous people of New Zealand. Issues with the collection and use of ethnicity data, and the impact of these on available data, will be discussed. The major issues for health policy and service delivery will be presented. Commonalities and differences in the experiences of Maoriu and indigenous peoples from other countries will be discussed.
Learning Objectives: Describe the political, demographic, socioeconomic and contemporary cultural experience of the Maori (indigenous) people from Aotearoa/New Zealand. Describe the health status of Maori (indigenous) children in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Describe the key policy and health service issues for children's health in New Zealand. Describe the issues relating to the collection and use of ethnicity data in New Zealnd and how these issues affect demographic and health status. Compare the information from New Zealand with that of indigenous children in opther countries. Identify commonalities and differences between New Zealand and other countries.
