                          The Prevalence And Risk Factors of Cardiovascular

                                  Diseases in Çankaya District of Ankara

                       Cardiovascular diseases are the number one  cause of death in Turkey and these deaths represent 46 % of all deaths. The aim of this study is to determine frequency and risk factors of cardiovascular diseases in Çankaya.

Material and Method : The study is conducted on people older than 15 years selected on the basis of 1/ 200 systematic sampling between 1998-2004 in Çankaya district of Ankara , 961 persons have been covered . A questionaire was applied to research group and  blood pressure, ECG, lipid profile, body weigth, height and,fasting blood glucose level were measured. Field, clinical and laboratory teams worked by the cooperation.

Results:The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, ischemic heart disease and rheumatic heart disease were 10.3%, 6.7% and 0.8% respectively. The prevalence of ischemic heart disease increase beginning from 40 years old for men and it reaches 32.6% over 55 years old for men and 37.3% for women. Ischemic heart disease is seen  one of ten men and  one of fourteen women who are at the age of 40-54. The risk factors of ischemic heart diseases were hypercollesterolemia, hypertrigliseridemia, high level of VLDL and low level of HDL, hyperglisemia and obesity. No difference found  between people who smoke and quite smoking with people who dont smoke, however risk of ischemic heart disease increases  for people who smoke 11 and more cigarette a day for 16 years and more( p<0.05).

Conclusion: It’s necessary to prevent people from ischemic heart diseases by changing the life styles of people who are at the risk of ischemic heart diseases.
