Objectives: To determine the obesity prevalence and some nutritional characteristics among first grade university students.
Method: The data of this cross-sectional study was gathered via a structured, pre-tested and self-administered questionnaire under observation from a total of 3095 students selected proportional to size according to the faculties. The students were informed about the aim of the study before the questionnaire implementation; they were let to free involving the study. Chi square test was performed to determine the associated factors.
Results: 49.1% of the participants was female; mean age was 19.9±1.3. According to the weight and height values asked to the students, BMI was calculated. Due to these figures, overweight prevalence was higher among males (8.3%) than females (2.8%) as in obesity (0.8% and 0.2%, respectively). Only 51.8% of them stated that they were happy with their body figure. Most of the females considered themselves as “overweight and obese” while males as “thin and in ideal weight”. Only 17.7% of them thought they “ate well”. Daily consumption of milk was 13.8%, meat 18.4%, egg 22.3%, yogurt and cheese 52.7%, fresh fruits 46.9% and fresh vegetables 41.2%. Bread was the basic food (90.7%). Some sweet and highly fat contained foods like chocolate, deserts and candies were consumed by 49.4% of the students. Only 23.0% of males and 55.6% of females were playing sports.
Conclusion: The students haven’t adopted healthy eating habits and playing sports in their way of life. In order to prevent from obesity and labile life, the sport opportunities should be increased and available fort he uses of adolescents, and especially in the faculties not related the health sciences, “protecting and improving health” should be a lecture topic and implemented the schedule of these faculties.
