Bulent Coskun, Professor Kocaeli University Community Mental Health Research and Training Center, Turkey
Community Mental Health Research and Training Center and Psychiatry Department of Kocaeli University, together with local Health Directorate of Kocaeli Province have worked closely to develop a "learning together" program for primary health care workers for promotion and prevention of mental health.
The goal of this presentation is to share the need for and the development process of this program.
There has been several programs for primary health care workers on mental health issues in Turkey but to our knowledge, primary health care workers did not have the teaching role both for the psychiatrists, psychiatry residents and medical students.
In this program, one of the major goals is to learn from the practitioners of the health centers about their experiences regarding mental health issues in their daily practice to reach the overall goal of improving mental health services for the population. Under this headline topics like psychosocial wellbeing, life styles, general attitudes toward health and disease are covered.
In addition to this, another major goal is planned to be looking into the psychosocial aspect of physical diseases - the practitioners and the specialists together, in order to learn from one another.
The third aim of the program is rather a traditional aspect – improving knowledge and skills about prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of psychiatric disorders (again by looking from different perspectives for mutual gain). Under this heading a special emphasis is reserved for activities regarding psychosocial aspects of trauma and disaster preparedness.
There are many video recordings of the activities implemented both at the University Center and the Health Care Centers of the PHC workers. Some examples of these video recordings are planned to be shared during the presentation. Lastly benefits of the program together with the "to be developed" aspects will be shared and opened to discussion.

Learning Objectives: Developing training programs for primary health care workers on mental health promotion and evaluating the implementation process of the program
