Objectives:
Aim of the study is to determine the frequency of diarrhea in the last 15 days and to evaluate the knowledge on diarrhea in two health center regions.
Methods: In this descriptive study data were collected with a questionnaire, from mothers of 0-59-month-old infants registered in the two health centers, by face to face interviews. In total 235 mothers participated in the study.
Results:
Of the mothers 34.9% were between 25 and 29 years old, 31.1% were 24 years old or younger, 36.2% were graduated from elementary school, and 27.7% from high school. 83% did not work and 7.2% didn’t have health security. In 37.4% of the houses more than four people lived. 59% of the infants were male, 29.8% were 12-23 months-old, 15.3% were younger than 6 months, and 94.5% were breastfed. In the last 15 days, water outage was seen in 94.5% of the houses, and in 61.7% of them the residents provided water themselves by storing it in bottles. 20.9% of the mothers defined “diarrhea” correctly. Of the infants 25.5% and of the residents 18.3% had diarrhea in the last 15 days.  The frequency of diarrhea was 33.0% in 6-23 months-old infants who had been started complementary feeding, a risk for diarrhea and malnutrition, 20.8% in the other age groups. Statistical relation between age and diarrhea was found (p<0.05). There were no relations for infants’ sex, mother’s age, and education level, number of people living in the same house, breastfeeding, work status, water outage, and diarrhea in the residents.
Conclusion:
Diarrhea was more common in the 6-23 months-old infants. The health workers in the region and the families should be informed on diarrhea, and the possible risk factors should be evaluated in analytic researches.
