Schools are important opportunity fields for the development of children’s health. Therefore, school health services are quite important.
This project was developed in a grade school in Istanbul for the purpose of demonstrating the effectiveness of school health nursing services.

The school is a public school located in Üsküdar, Istanbul (N=1247). The project was conducted between 2002 and 2005, by the members of Marmara University School of Nursing.

The data were collected via School Health Nursing Computer Program (OSHP), based on Omaha Nursing Classification Model. OSHP was developed for this project and used for the first time. The data were assessed with complementary statistics (number and per cent).
During 2002-2005, school health nursing services were rendered five days a week. Findings regarding the health assessments of all students, the health problems of the students who applied to the health office and the intervention and assessment results were recorded in the system. Health assessments were made for all students twice, once in the first year and once in the last year. During the project, 9360 problems were detected in the first year and 7887 problems were detected in the last year according to Omaha problem sorting list (PSL). In the initial two years, it was detected that physiological problems were prevalent. These were followed by health behavior, psycho-social and environmental problems, respectively. Four nursing intervention groups were made for the problems detected. The groups comprised of: 1. Health Education, guidance and consultancy, 2. Treatment and Procedures, 3. Case Management, 4. Follow-up. As a result of interventions, it was detected that environmental problems and psycho-social, physiological and health behavior problems of the individuals decreased.

The school heath nursing practices made via OSHP program developed based on the Omaha Nursing Classification Model became effective in school health services.

Learning Objectives: This project was developed in a grade school in Istanbul for the purpose of demonstrating the effectiveness of school health nursing services. Environmental problems and psycho-social, physiological and health behavior problems of the individuals decreased. It is recommended that school health nursing services be generalized in grade schools and the OSHP program developed on the basis of Omaha Nursing Classification Model be improved and used for rendering services.

Sub-Theme: Lessons learned from community-based public health research
