144.06 The perceptions of community pharmacists of herbal medicine in Ibadan, Nigeria

PURPOSE: The perception of Community Pharmacists (CPs) of Herbal Medicine (HM) in Nigeria aimed at exploring the knowledge and attitude of CPs of HM, and also to establish and access hindrance to HM.
METHODS: The study utilized qualitative methodological triangulation using Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), In-Depth Interview and Key-Informants Interviews. Three FGDs comprised seven respondents each; also 12 In-depth interviews and 6 key-informant interview were conducted. Data were analyzed using context analysis and ethnographic summary.
RESULTS: Contextual and ethnographic graphic analyses showed that CPs has knowledge of HM, and its efficacy. The result showed that charlatan, quacks and deceitful practices and the problems of HM. Lack of regulation and standardization also contributed to the confidence crisis in HM. Lastly, the attitude of Government vis-à-vis technocrat’s lackadaisical approach is a serious setback to acceptability of HM.  
CONCLUSION: The CPs, traditional medical practitioners and Government need to collaborate and also have confidence in each other; also, there should be pragmatic shifting from present debate to action plan in order to improve incorporation HM in health services especially in developing countries.
