“Motivation on Job Performance of Nurses at University College Hospital, Ibadan”. It was observed that the understanding or meaning of most people on motivation differs. Nurses are the backbone of health care delivery team, and they need to be motivated in order to perform their work efficiently. The study was exploratory.
The objectives of the study are to examine the techniques used to motivate the health organization and their relationship with productivity; to find out how good human relation motivate workers towards effective job performance; to examine the effect of inadequate medical equipment and unstimulating hospital environment on productivity; to examine the effect of job enriched and job enlargement on productivity; and to examine the impact of effective communication on productivity workers.
It was a study with 100 Nurses out of 763 in the Nursing Department of the study setting. Accidental sampling method was used due to shifting duty and all cadres of Nurses were used. Questionnaires were the method used for the quantitative data collection. Simple Descriptive Statistics Method was used for Data analysis. The Qualitative part was done with In-depth Interview with key officers of the Union. And the analysis was done using Contextual Analysis and Ethnographic Technique.
It was found out that 60% of Nurses have knowledge of motivation; also 68% agreed that hospital is not well equipped and 62% believed the work is depressing. The response showed that 64% believed that incentives and motivators given did not determine their productivity. The response showed that poor salary (24%), lack of basic incentives (52%) lack of praises from the superior (20%) et, accounted for lack of motivation. The Qualitative result showed that the establishment was not addressing welfare of the staff in the organization.
