Background
The ‘community mental health’ concept represents the care related to individuals and their environments where they interact. This care is carried out in the frame of primary health care as an ambulatory service out of the hospital and in the houses or settings where individuals are living. Health professionals, particularly nurses, have a key role in promoting mental health, preventing mental illness and improving access to mental health services.

Purpose
The main objective of this study is to define the further training needs of nurses on community based  mental health and to develop training materials for especially e-learning and blended learning activities.

 Material and Method

This cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in nurses (113) working in the primary health care system in Mugla, Fethiye and Ankara in March-April 2008. The questionnaire developed for the project of ‘WAP/Vocational Training on Community Based Psychiatric Nursing’  was used as the data collection tool.

Results
Almost all of the items in the questionnaire about the need for further training were stated as ‘very important’ by the nurses (M=5.52). The most important item is ‘Teamwork with individual colleagues’ (M=5.75). It is followed by  ‘The legal background and organisation of health services. Professional role in mental health nursing’ occupies the forth row with the topics ‘Assessment (medical, nursing and holistic)’ and ‘Methodology and Models (therapeutic approaches, communication, managing relationships, counselling)’ (M= 5.57).
The activities about which the nurses consider themselves not highly efficient are ‘Working with therapists and social workers’ (M=4.23), ‘Promoting and supporting a client’s social-network and relationship with family (M=4.50), and ‘Supporting the clients to manage their health problems’ (M= 4.51).

 Conclusion

Results proved the existence of the urgent further training needs of nurses in terms of community based mental health care.
