The effects of nursing education and training on reducing burnout in mothers who have a mentally disabled child
ABSTRACT
Aim The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of participation in a nursing education program on reducing burnout in mothers who have a mentally disabled child. To this aim, we tested the hypothesis that participation in such an educational program will reduce the amount of burnout in mothers who have a mentally disabled child.
Background This education program provided the mothers with information about the characteristics of mentally disabled children, how to provide the proper care for their child, coping with the stress associated with caring for a mentally disabled child, and familiarized them with their child's education, rehabilitation, and the support services available for the families of mentally disabled children.
Method A randomized controlled trial model was used in this study. The sample population used in this study consisted of 90 women who were each the mother of a mentally disabled child.
The participants were randomly divided into two groups. The mothers in the study group took part in an interactive educational program that was designed and presented by the researcher.
Finding Burnout levels of the mothers were assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory before and after the nursing education. Participation in a nursing education program reduced the level of burnout experienced by mothers who have a mentally disabled child.
Conclusion The results of this study suggest that nursing education should be provided to mothers who have a mentally disabled child in order to reduce the amount of burnout that these mothers typically experience.
