Introduction: Violence has been a source of concern at all levels of public life, in speeches, in political programs and in proposals for action. In view of the high levels of violence which involve the young people on the outskirts of the metropolitan areas, a research project is being undertaken with the support of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development – CNPq, in the southern region of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The homicide rates, especially that involving the young population of the male sex, are high in the region (SMS, 2005).
Objectives: The identification and characterization of collective actions and participative experiments of health promotion and confrontation with juvenile violence.
Method: A case study involving interviews with key informants, analysis of written records and data from secondary sources.
Results: In the region there is an intersectorial program for peace, consisting of partners of the local government authorities such as non-government organizations, organized society and teaching institutions, public schools and family health teams. The objectives of this program are the promotion of peaceful co-existence and security between young people and adults, the reduction of crime and the development of all the potentialities of the young people by means of cultural, leisure and other training activities. The integration of efforts expected for this program has not yet materialized, but little by little networks of support and protection for the adolescents, capable of exercising their effect on the determining factors of the violence in the region, are being built up.
Conclusion: Integrated efforts on the part of the local authorities, non-government organizations and civil society are increasing the social capital of the region, empowering the young people, promoting peace and reducing the number of violent deaths of young people.

Learning Objectives: Identify and analyze the collective actions and participative experiments of health promotion and confrontation with juvenile violence.

Sub-Theme: Health Promotion as a strategy for intersectoral action
