130.05 Evaluation of job stress and job stress induced hyper tension

Job stress (JS) is defined as the physical and emotional response that results from interaction of workers and condition of work. The aim of the current study was to assess the work environment and level of JS; hypertension induced by JS and the various parameters that cause it. Job contact questionnaire was prepared and data were collected by a survey among 3 different groups of working people viz-a-viz Administrative Officers (AO), Traffic Police (TP) and Bus Drivers (BD). Their systolic and diastolic BP were measured and recorded along with the survey. The data collected were analyzed statistically. The study was conducted among 343 subjects (AO-56%, TP-27% and BD-16%). By assessing the various parameters that contribute to the stress, it was found that the skill discretion / ability to utilize their own skills and the decision authority, co-worker support, superior's support were high for AO group. AO group has a good amount of control over the job (62.8%) than the TP (53.2%) and BD (50.2%).The psychological workload, psychological stress, compound psychological strain were maximum in BD group. The toxic exposure scale was highest for TP (4.8) and BD (2.9). TP experience the maximum sleeping problem with a mean level of 0.4438 than BD (0.4030) and AO (0.2510). It was observed that BD was having the highest level of job satisfaction (0.5706) than the TP (0.4876)   and AO (0.4264). Systolic BP (131.60 mm Hg) and diastolic BP (87.49) were found to be maximum for the BD group. It was observed that AO group was less stressed than TP and BD groups. Work related stress consequently, affects the health of organizations and the dependants. In order to avoid untoward effects, all the groups were counseled and advised to have daily exercises, yoga and insisted the importance of antioxidants in their day-to-day life.

Learning Objectives: Stress at work is a relatively new phenomenon of modern lifestyles. The nature of work has gone through drastic changes over the last century and it is still changing at whirlwind speed. They have touched almost all professions, starting from an artist to a surgeon, or a commercial pilot to a sales executive. With change comes stress, inevitably. Professional stress or job stress poses a threat to physical health. Work related stress in the life of organized workers, consequently, affects the health of organizations. In order to avoid untoward effects of stress, all the groups were counseled and advised to have daily exercises, yoga and insisted the importance of antioxidants in their day-to-day life.
