The creation of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA) Tobacco Control working program and/or group in 1997 was in response to support and advocate for the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Using its official status with the World Health Organization, the WFPHA not only provided input to the World Health Assembly on FCTC issues but also accredited member public health associations (PHAs) at the negotiation process to advocate and develop guidelines and protocols related to FCTC Articles. At the last regional meeting, many PHAs reaffirmed the role of the WFPHA on global tobacco control particularly with respect to monitoring the application of FCTC Articles and the promotion of intersectoral collaboration and coalitions at the international level. However, a number of challenges were identified including: consistent technical and financial assistance to PHAs for tobacco control; the coordination of regional and national tobacco control efforts; and dedicated support to linking broader issues related to substance use and non]communicable diseases.
The session will discuss and strategize potential opportunities and collaborations for pursuing global tobacco control projects with local and international funders. Panel presenters will reflect on how projects came to fruition and what steps, partnerships, evidence, and commitment was required to move forward ideas and obtain support. The session will be useful to member PHAs focused on pursuing greater tobacco control efforts.
Learning objectives:
1) To discuss specific requests for technical or financial assistance for action on FCTC Article guidelines
2) To identify opportunities for collaboration for tobacco control research or projects
3) To generate new policy, research, and themes upon which to focus future tobacco control efforts
