87 Birth At Home

Introduction: In recent years, many changes have occurred in the mentality as well as possibilities regarding homebirth. Along with the new trend suggesting that more women are opting to deliver at home, new discussions and opinions form on this controversial subject.

Aim: The aim of this research was to uncover women’s opinion of giving birth at home.

Methodology: One hundred women in the age group of 18-35, representing different social groups, were surveyed using own questionnaire in 2009. The sample included women who already gave birth, as well as those who have not yet given birth.

Results: Forty-five percent of women do not want to have any close person present during childbirth. Eighty-eight percent of women would not like to give birth at home. Eighty-six percent of women regards giving birth to a child at home as not safe for them or for their babies.

Conclusions: The majority of women considers homebirth irresponsible and connected with an unnecessary risk for the life of both mother and child.
