This project has three-steps in process. In the first-step, both Association of Peer Helping Unite and Yeniden Health and Education Society performed the training of 43 volunteer members who want to be peer educators as well.Communication skills, training techniques, and "Peer Education Program in Preventing Addiction(PEPPA)" was performed. At the second-stage four-member teams of peer educators and 286 peers who are attending the School of Foreign Languages in prep classes formed 10 groups and peers were trained by the peer educators.Five modules of PEPPA training performed simultaneously at the lesson times between the months of December 2010 and May 2011.In the third-stage students were administered a questionnaire to measure knowledge level and attitudes about smoking, alcohol and substance use.The questionnaire was applied to 86 students who had no peer education in order to compare the effect of training. To measure the students' level of knowledge the scale of 18 questions applied which is part of PEPPA and were answered during training. The evaluation phase was based on individual questions, and absolute scoring. That is, true is“1” and false is“0”.High points indicated more level of knowledge.
The correct response in 15 questions increased after training. The students have a significant difference between before and after training knowledge scores(p<0.05)(11.7±2.3,12.7±3.0,respectively).In each three of the group, no significant differences were found between the scores before training(p>0.05).Statistically significant differences were found between the groups, indicating better scores of peer educators and the students after the education than the control group(p<0.05)(14.5±4.4;12.2±2.3;11.1±2.7,respectively).
In present research, the peer education was significantly found to improve the students' level of knowledge. So the peer education model could be carried out in different themes of health improvement programs to achieve successful results.
Learning Objectives: To discuss peer education model in the context of interventions to improve health, and to transfer this results to different areas of health promotion. Peer education was given by the medical doctors, psychologist and psychological counselor of Association of Peer Helping Unite; members of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Public Health and Forensic Medicine and School of Foreign Languages ; and the team of psychiatrist and psychologists from the “Yeniden Health and Education Society” This study is a comprehensive part of a research project which is supported by Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University Scientific Research Fund and the Association of Peer Helping Unite(APHU), with project number 2010/264.
