New Vaccine Initiatives Toward Improving Child Survival and Achieving MDG4

The author will make a historical review of the use of the vaccines, since the experience with smallpox eradication, the cruzade to vaccinate all children of the world and the recent eradication of polio, measles and rubella from the Western Hemisphere. It will also cover the experiences with the introduction of new and under utilized vaccines in national immunization programs and the efforts of countries to financially sustain their immunization programs.

Learning Objectives: Understand the importance of vaccines for the achievement of the MDGs.
