The WHO Health in Prisons Programme (HIPP) was launched in 1995 with 8 countries involved and has grown to the present position of 45 countries from all parts of Europe coming together to exchange experiences on prison health and to produce consensus guidance of possible improvements. This presentation will explain how HIPP works, what it has done and will indicate some of the important guidance documents produced and published. The issues currently being considered, including a request for WHO to produce a guidance document on the Stewardship of Prison Health, will be listed and the need for wide exchange of experiences and advice from all, as these are global issues, will be stressed.
