291 Counseling of Patients with Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of pharmacist provide patient counseling on treatment outcomes and quality of life (QoL) in hypertensive and diabetes mellitus patients, improving their knowledge, attitude and practice. It is a randomized prospective controlled study. Patients in the test group were counseled and given information about the disease management, whereas control group received information only at the end of the study. The follow-up was carried out over a period of six months in which KAP and QoL of the patients was assessed using KAP questionnaire and SF-12 respectively. The scores were evaluated and statistically analyzed. A comparative study was made between the pre-counseling and post-couneling scores of test groups. A total of 41 patients, 21 control and 20 test were included in the study. A statistically significant difference (P<0.001) was observed between the pre-counseling and post-counesling KAP scores of test group whereas control group scores were not significant (p>0.001). the control group scores of both PCS and MCS were not significantly different in the follow-up. A significant difference (p<0.001) between pre counseling and post counseling PCS scores of test group and no difference between MCS scores was observed. The test group patients showed statistically significant improvement in systolic, diastolic blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Our study confirms that improvement in knowledge of the disease and its management had positive impact on treatment outcomes and quality of life (PCS). This study thus emphasis the impact of patient counseling on KAP & QoL in patients with diabetes and hypertension.
