Objective: The purpose of the study was using EQ-5D instrument to describe and analyze inequalities in health status among different socio-demographic and economic rural residents covered by NRCMS in China.

Methods: A total of 360 respondents were selected by multistage stratified systematic sampling method in Lian Yungang city, China. A questionnaire consisting of EQ-5D and demographic and socioeconomic information was adopted for data collection, and was obtained from face-to-face interview.

Results: From VAS score and EQ-5D score, we found that Respondents’ health status decreased from younger to older ones and the higher the educational level the healthier the respondents were. Students’ health was the poorest among the four groups, even worse than retired and unemployed subjects. As for EQ-5D five dimensions, elderly respondents were more likely to report moderate or severe problems than those who were younger in all dimensions except for anxiety/depression. Respondents with lower educational level reported more moderate or severe problems especially for pain/discomfort dimension. Subjects with college or above education level reported the highest percentage with moderate or severe anxiety/depression problems. Students were found suffering more anxiety/depression issues. Relative rich respondents reported more pain/discomfort problems.

Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the inequalities among different socioeconomic and demographic rural residents covered by NRCMS which will contribute to further comparisons with similar studies. The implications addressed here are better for further development of NRCMS.

Learning Objectives: 1. Using EQ-5D instrument to measure health status of rural residents covered by New Rural Cooperative Medical System from which to recognize the inequalities existed among different social groups; 2. Create specific knowledge of current situations of inequalities, which can be compared with similar observations at a future date to facilitate the development of better health policies with NRCMS in specialty to improvehealth equity.
