INTRODUCTION. Public health involves a set of technical, ideological, political and economic practices developed in an academic sphere, health organization and research institutions linked to different schools of thought resulting from projects on health reform. The importance of public health is in knowledge of community health social needs, acting in health promotion and prevention through activities directed to behavior of individuals, focusing on lifestyle within the family and cultural environment of communities. Thus, it is valid to consider students integration with community, collective activities and learning in the field of health promotion, with the aim to improving life quality of the studied community. METHODOLOGY. Medical students from Federal University of Alagoas developed activities at Roseane Collor Community, in Maceio, Alagoas. Activities were composed by domiciliary visits when were filled out research forms about alcohol, smoking, sexual transmitted diseases and others relevant social questions. Blood pressure was measured in adults and guidance about hygiene and nutrition were given. There were social activities at Basic Health Unit, the routine of health professionals was observed by the students, lectures about STD, dengue and oral hygiene at Zumbi dos Palmares School. RESULTS. Insertion of students at community, educational, domiciliary and basic health unit environment created knowledge opportunities on epidemiologic aspects through collection and analysis of data; behavioral aspects, through opportunity of relationship with patients from basic health unit; students experienced BHU routine observing difficulties related to doctor-patient relationship. CONCLUSION. Notions of public health concepts, family health strategies and health promotion were consolidated by the students through global vision of community behavioral and environmental aspects. Humanistic and holistic vision, advocated by health standards, is associated to multidisciplinarity to reach the targets of the trilogy: tuition-knowledge-health.

Learning Objectives: The importance of public health is in knowledge of community health social needs, acting in health promotion and prevention through activities directed to behavior refitment of individuals, focusing in lifestyle within the family and cultural environment of communities. Humanistic and holistic vision, advocated by health standards, is associated to multidisciplinarity to reach the targets of trilogy tuition-knowledge-health.
